Some children wanted to investigate what happened to objects travelling down a ramp when they changed the ramp surface. They began by fixing sandpaper to one pipe and leaving the other uncovered. The children made predictions about what they thought would happen.

A:“It feels funny, it hurts my hands, the car might not go down.”
K:“It’s rough, sandpaper, the wheels will make the car go down, but if it has no wheels I’ll have to push it down the sandpaper.”

They then tried letting objects go down the sandpaper and commented on what happened.

A:“The car still goes down fast, I don’t have to push it.”
K:“It is the wheels that make it go down fast but I’ll try the shell it has no wheels, I had to push it to make it go and it still went slow.”

Here, the children realised that because the car had wheels, the friction from the sandpaper had little effect on the car’s speed. There are two main reasons for this. Friction can only act on an object where it is in contact with the surface. The wheels of the car have a small surface area, so the force of friction acting on the car from the sandpaper is small compared to the weight of the car. If the wheels of the car are free to rotate, they also experience friction differently to an immobile surface of an object, such as the shell in the children’s example. As the wheels can rotate in this case, the car is not slowed down too much by the change in surface.

The children rightly realised that an object without wheels would likely be slowed down more by the sandpaper. They found a large shell to test out their theory. They found that the shell required a push to start it moving and that it travelled a lot slower than the car. In the images below, we can see the experiment the children performed.

The children also experimented with using hessian to cover the pipe. Here, the fabric does exert friction on the objects, but the bumps in the fabric might actually hook onto the objects too. When this happens, it is not friction stopping the objects from moving, but tension in the fabric.

A:“This has funny bits on, its like my clothes.”
K:“I think the car will STOP on this one and the shell.”

The children also experimented by covering the pipe with bubble wrap. Whilst this can change the friction the objects experience, the biggest change here is the bumps in the bubble wrap. These bumps mean that the object must be travelling fast enough to avoid coming to a stop when travelling over the bump. This experiment and the children’s discussion are shown below.

J:“What about this plastic, it has circles in it, I think everything will get stuck in here, nothing will move down the ramp.”
J:“It is still moving the car, I have to give it a little push to make it start to move but then my pushing makes it go even down the holes, it’s a bit bumpy though.”
J:“What can we put on the ramp to stop things moving, I think it will have to be something really really bumpy.”

This child was surprised that the car would move down the ramp if he gave it a big enough push. This is because once the car has enough kinetic energy, it is able to move to the top of each of the bumps on the bubble wrap. From there, it is able to accelerate down to the next bump, gaining enough energy to make it over. The child also noticed that the cars movement over the bumps was not very smooth, this could lead to a nice conversation about suspension in cars.

In their experiment, the children explored several variables that can change the speed an object travels down a ramp. These include friction, having a material that can catch on an object, like the hessian and changing the gradient of the surface, like the bubble wrap. Another method the children could have explored is using an oil to lubricate the surface of the pipe. The oil creates a barrier between the object and the surface of the pipe, allowing the object to move more freely over the surface.
